Down with Power Dressing. The New Dress Code...

Foyrt years ago, professional women began to 'power dress' to reach the top of the corporate ladder. It started the trend for women going to work in a uniform - blue or grey suits, white or blue shirts, big shouldered blazers or double breasted suit jackets. It seemed that if you wanted to be powerful, you had to dress like a man.

In today's world, it's no longer a uniform but beautifully tailored clothes that are stylish yet sensitive to your shape, that fit real women and, most importantly, make life easier. Because, as a high-powered woman, you are mainly about things other than clothes. You want to be the kind of person that gets things right, and to showcase a wardrobe that is perfectly formed, easily.

Our advice is to follow the new dress code and use your clothes to help highlight your talents. It will be one of the best investments in your future you can make. Here's how you do it:

1. Do Simplicity Well

Declutter your wardrobe and cull what isn't working for you. Aim to build an easy capsule work wardrobe with high quality pieces that will last more than a few years. This will make dressing for work simple so you can focus on the more important tasks at hand. When you're shopping to add to your capsule wardrobe, look for plain cuts that flatter your shape and avoid overly fussy detail. Dresses, longline jackets and clothes with minimal line-breaks will help to flatter your figure.

2. Be Comfortable

Ultimately you are the one that wants to get noticed but not for the wrong reasons. Avoid clothes that are too tight or heels that are too high. It's not only important to look comfortable but to feel comfortable. Choose the right fit for your shape, choose the right fabrics that don't crease and feel good.

3. Build Outfits

In the long run, putting a blast of effort into selecting the right pieces will pay off. Focus on putting together a capsule wardrobe to help you build outfits for work. We'd advise that you invest in outfits from one brand at a time as they are designed to be worn together. For example, Bow Savile's pieces can be mixed and matched to style your whole working week. Most brands do this and will recommend outfits for you. This really is the alternative to the working man's simple suit. A simple wardrobe with beautiful workwear to choose from each day.

4. Style Beats Fashion

Keeping up with fashion trends is usually not a good idea in the workplace. Don't feel the pressure to dress in line with the trends, instead find trends that suit your own style. You don't have to be fashionable to be well dressed.

5. Add a pop of colour

If you are wearing black or choose neutral, non-colour colours, add a single item that has a pop of colour, such as our Savile Swing coat or Pussy Bow Blouse, to bring style and confidence to your outfit.
