The looming end of maternity leave...

Here at Bow Savile, many of us are mums. We've been in your shoes, wondering if it's the right thing to do...going back to work is daunting for many reasons but it doesn't have to be. It could be the start of a great new challenge, a new chapter for you and your family. An opportunity to revive the clever, successful and ambitious you. At the very least you'll be able to go to the loo on your own.

How you are perceived by employers and work colleagues is one of the main concerns mum's have when they return to work. However, attracting and keeping female professionals who have left work to start a family has become a requirement for many organisations to help combat skills shortages. Extra paid maternity leave, childcare arrangements such as a crèche onsite and flexible working options are being seen much more in the drive to attract highly skilled mum's back to work. Although many organisations are still struggling to provide even the basics.

If this is you, then being fully equipped to go back can make the transition much easier. Here are some tips on how to prepare yourself for returning to work:

Keep in touch. Keeping in touch with employers and colleagues during your maternity leave is the best way to make your return to work simpler and less stressful. It also shows employers that you are serious about returning to your career.

Re-organise your work wardrobe There simply couldn't be a better excuse to go shopping. Most women returning to work find that their workwear wardrobe needs to up its game before they make their office come back, but that’s easily rectified. Spend some time putting together some workwear outfits you feel confident in from your existing clothes and treat yourself to some new ones to build your easy to manage work wardrobe. We'd obviously recommend our own collection as it's been tried and tested on real women, like us, who have had kids and need flattering shapes and sizes without compromising on beautiful fabrics and a polished look. It just takes a few key pieces to mix with your current wardrobe and you'll look and feel great.

Keep on top of the news and developments in your industry. Read the news and relevant websites to help you to stay up-to-date and have the knowledge to provide valuable insights to your employer and colleagues.

Return to work gradually. Going back to work doesn’t necessarily mean going straight back to full time employment. Job sharing, part time and flexible hours can all help give you time to readjust, both emotionally and physically. Whilst many organisations dont have formal policies in place, many informal arrangements normally exist - remember if you dont as you dont get.

Upskill yourself with refresher courses. There are lots of free or inexpensive courses online that can reboot and/or add to your knowledge to give you the extra bit of confidence you might need.

Do a test run Get up, get dressed (in your new Bow Savile - the Swing Coat with a pop of lime should do it) and test out your commute. It will make you feel less stressed when you do it for real and you get to test your new workwear. What a good excuse.

Good luck. From all us mum's at Bow Savile, Good Luck to all of you who are returning to work. #wearthedifference #women #bebrave

p.s. if you have been out of work longer than just maternity leave and have taken a career break have a look at the www.shesback.co.uk. They are a brilliant organisation focusing on helping women back into professional life...
